The company's name, Meshwesh Publishing Inc., was inspired by the Libyan-Egyptian people, the Meshwesh (also known as the Maasha or Ma), who lived in the Nile Delta in the late 2nd and early 1st millennia BC. In his book, The Fundamental Question, the founder of the company, Rodger Roberts, concluded that the biblical Moses (or Moshe) was modeled on a historical Libyan-Egyptian military commander from the 23rd Dynasty of Egypt who lived in the second half of the 8th century BC, by the name of Maasha (after his tribe of origin, the Maasha or Meshwesh). Inspired by this link, Rodger decided to name the company after the Meshwesh people, who, he believed, had bequeathed their name to the biblical Moses. This interpretation is consistent with the historical evidence and the reference in the Bible's book of Exodus (2:10) that claims that Moses was given that name because he was "drawn out" of the water, the Hebrew word for "draw out" being "masha" or mashah."
